Suicidal Thoughts
What Are Suicidal Thoughts?
Suicidal thoughts can range from wishing you were no longer here to thinking about ending your life. Some people may experience these thoughts without intending to act on them, while others may begin considering or making plans. These thoughts can arise when emotional pain feels overwhelming or when someone feels hopeless, trapped or unable to see a way forward.
What Can Contribute to Suicidal Thoughts?
There is rarely one single cause. Suicidal thoughts may be connected to depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, grief, financial pressure, physical illness, substance use or a significant life crisis.Whatever the reason, suicidal thoughts should always be taken seriously, and you deserve support.
Can Counselling Help?
Therapy can provide a confidential and compassionate space to explore what you are experiencing and the circumstances contributing to these thoughts. However, The Coping Corner is not an emergency or crisis service. If you feel you may act on suicidal thoughts or cannot keep yourself safe, call 112 or 999, go to your nearest emergency department, or contact Pieta’s 24-hour crisis helpline on 1800 247 247. You can also text HELP to 51444.
